I thought that The Fallen of World War II was very effective and well done to explain the numbers involved in the War. Data storytelling can be defined as a structured way of communicating data insights that include the data, visuals, and a narrative. The video covered all of that.
The video used human-shaped figures to represent the human numbers of civilian and military deaths in the form of bar graphs to show the comparison of numbers. It showed the data as visual numbers to help the viewer understand how big of a number there was. The speaker added additional information, like what specific battle or event caused what number of deaths.
I thought that each element was important in telling the whole story. The speaker's narrative helped fully explain what was going on rather than just giving out the data. The data is important because that's what viewers are looking for and wanting to know. The visuals help enhance the data that the viewer receives from the speaker.
The Fallen of World War II covers all of the bases of being memorable, persuasive, and engaging. The overall story can be memorable because we have experience with knowing about World War II, but the video even added some additional and perhaps previously unknown information. It was memorable for the speaker to portray the numbers as civilians and then military deaths. It was persuasive in that the story convinced the viewer in believing the numbers given. As the speaker said though, the numbers can vary from different resources based on who considers what civilian deaths and military causalities count. It was engaging because it entrances viewers into the video with the numerous graphics.
The Fallen of World War II was very effective in telling an emotional story about the tragedy that was World War II. For me it was mind-blowing to see the numbers stacked against each other. My jaw dropped when it was showing the Soviet Union deaths and how the bar graph just kept going. Looking at the YouTube comments, other viewers were shocked at the amount of causalities and how emotional and effective the video was.
